Butterfly Home Care of Manassas — Franchisee Story
From Military Service to Home Care: The Story of Natalie & Sam Smith
- Opened: October 2025
- Location: Manassas, VA
“First and foremost, your success is up to you. You may be in business for yourself, but you are not doing it by yourself.”
— Sam Smith, Co-Owner
Where They Came From
Before Butterfly, Natalie spent her career supporting the disability community through nonprofits and local government. Sam served over 21 years in the military before retiring in 2021, then worked with several local small businesses. Two careers defined by discipline, service, and showing up for others, the foundation they brought into business ownership.
When they started exploring franchise opportunities, they weren’t just looking for a business model. They were looking for something that matched who they already were.
What drew them to Butterfly
Natalie and Sam explored multiple franchises and business opportunities before landing on Butterfly Home Care. What stood out wasn’t a market opportunity or a financial projection, it was the people.
“Everyone here leads from the heart and focuses on service to others first. The caliber of people within the organization and the values they embody made the decision clear.”
They were drawn specifically to the belief that Butterfly would invest in them as people — not just as operators — and help them grow into whatever they were capable of becoming.
The moment they said yes
Natalie and Sam were all in from their very first conversation with Becky. They could see immediately that the vision wasn’t just about expanding a brand, it was about expanding people. There was a genuine desire, from day one, to grow them into successful business owners and community leaders.
After doing their due diligence and weighing the pros and cons, what ultimately sealed it was simple: their personal values and Butterfly’s mission were the same. They felt called to serve — and this was the right way to do it.
Six months in: what the journey looks like
When they started in October 2025, Natalie and Sam couldn’t have imagined how many dimensions there would be to this business. Licensing, team-building, community outreach, care delivery — each step has been a new learning curve. But at each step, the support has been there.
The onboarding process gave them the guidance and confidence to tackle obstacles as they arose. And through it all, the Butterfly team has consistently helped them keep their focus on what matters most: providing quality care.
“What impressed us most was the amount of individualized support we received — to ensure we were comfortable with every aspect of standing up our business and developing a strategy to serve our customers and caregivers well.”
What they’re building in Manassas
For Natalie and Sam, success over the next few years looks like being known as the best home care provider in their area — built on trust, compassion, and a person-centered mindset. But their vision extends beyond care delivery.
They want to create meaningful jobs for their team members — roles that carry a sense of purpose, not just a paycheck. And they want to foster a culture where every caregiver treats every client as family.
